Ably AI Transport is a managed realtime transport layer for AI agent and LLM applications, addressing session continuity when a direct agent-to-client connection drops. When an agent crashes or a client disconnects, session state is kept in Ably's infrastructure rather than in the connection itself, so a client can resume a streaming response from the point of disconnection instead of restarting it.
The service keeps a session on one channel across devices, so switching from a browser tab to a phone continues the same conversation in real time. It also lets a client cancel an in-progress run and start a new one without breaking the stream, and it exposes an agent's live status (thinking, streaming, idle, or offline) alongside session history and an audit trail. It is added to an existing stack with a few lines of code, in place of custom reconnection and retry logic.
Features
- Session persistence: session state lives in Ably's infrastructure so a streaming response resumes from the exact point of disconnection rather than restarting
- Cross-device continuity: every device is put on the same channel, so a conversation carries over between a browser tab and other devices
- Mid-response redirects: a client can cancel an in-progress run and start a new one without breaking the stream
- Status signaling: exposes whether an agent is thinking, streaming, idle, or offline
- Session history and audit: a durable session layer records session history and an audit trail
