Codex-X is a cross-platform desktop app for managing the OpenAI Codex desktop client and Codex CLI. It gathers prompt templates, third-party API providers, local sessions, skills, MCP servers, and the Codex TOML configuration into one visual interface, so you do not edit those files by hand.
Its central feature is prompt injection management. Prompts are kept like plugins: grouped into categories, imported from Markdown, edited, and switched on or off one at a time. Each enabled prompt is written into the Codex instruction file either by appending to your existing instructions or by replacing them, and Codex-X backs the file up before every change. The bundled and GitHub-synced templates cover everyday coding, debugging, code review, technical writing, and editing, and also include jailbreak-style "unrestricted" prompts aimed at security research and reverse engineering.
Provider management stores several named official Codex logins alongside third-party API providers. You can test a connection, fetch and test models, copy a provider, and switch between them, and providers can be imported from cc-switch. Its local routing accepts the Responses, Chat Completions, Claude Messages, and native Gemini interfaces. A new provider takes effect in the next Codex session without restarting the client.
Session management searches local Codex sessions, groups them by project path, checks and syncs them to the current provider, and permanently deletes single sessions, selections, or whole projects. A settings tab charts local token usage by date and model, with subagent usage counted under its parent session. The app is built with Tauri, React, and Rust, stores its own data in SQLite, and ships for macOS, Windows, and Linux with in-app updates.
