01 / Summary

About Hermes Browser Extension.

Hermes Browser Extension is a browser side panel for the Hermes agent runtime, not a standalone browser chatbot. It runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave, and other Chromium browsers, with a Firefox build that covers chat and page context. It sends the active web page as context to a Hermes agent, and over local and remote API connections the panel uses the models, tools, skills, sessions, memory, and MCP servers already configured in Hermes.

The panel connects in one of three modes. Local gateway talks to Hermes running on the same machine with a scoped browser token or API key. Hermes Cloud attaches to a signed-in Hermes Cloud agent tab through a short-lived, single-use WebSocket ticket and is chat-only, so no page text, selections, or attachments are sent. Remote gateway reaches a self-hosted Hermes backend on another machine, either through its API server with a key or through a signed-in dashboard.

Browser context capture is read-only and the extension takes no autonomous page control. Page content is wrapped as untrusted context before it reaches Hermes, credential-bearing URLs are omitted, and banking, payment, health, and similar pages are restricted. Hermes Control, which lets the agent operate a real tab, is available only in Chromium browsers. Hermes Assist inserts a reviewed draft into a focused text field only after an explicit user action and never sends or submits it.

  • Connection modes: local gateway, Hermes Cloud agent tab, or self-hosted remote gateway
  • Page context: reads this tab, selected tabs, or a chosen set of tabs per turn
  • Bot Mode: switches between Hermes agents, edits profiles, and runs group chats where several agents reply in one room
  • Hermes Control: attaches the agent to a real tab to click, type, and scroll (Chromium only)
  • Hermes Assist: drafts text beside supported composers without sending, posting, or submitting
  • Attachments and screenshots: per-file cards with preview and save, plus an on-demand screenshot of the visible page
  • Page comments: pins notes to page elements and queues them beside a question to Hermes
  • Message tools: copy, edit, and restore checkpoint on supported turns, plus a remembered reasoning-effort control
  • Security model: untrusted-context wrapping, restricted page categories, and no debugger, cookies, history, or bookmarks permissions
  • Appearance: light, dark, or system mode with twelve themes, text zoom, and font choice
  • Support diagnostics: a copyable report of connection state and errors that excludes keys, tokens, and page text
