Kocoro is a cowork agent that runs locally on a Mac with access to files, apps, the browser, the terminal, and the screen. It produces deliverables such as documents and spreadsheets on the machine, and it can be reached from team chat channels (Slack, LINE, Feishu, and Telegram) as well as from its own interfaces. Kocoro Desktop, a separate closed-source native app, is the main interface. The open-source part is the engine and daemon, a Go runtime that runs the agent loop, local tools, permission engine, channel messaging, MCP, and scheduling, and can be used on its own through a CLI, a terminal UI, a local HTTP API, or MCP.
It is built on Shannon, a multi-agent framework, and needs a Shannon Gateway for model completions and remote tools: either the hosted Shannon Cloud or a self-hosted gateway. Local models can be used through Ollama. Chat channel messages reach the daemon through Shannon Cloud, which routes each channel to a named agent and runs up to five agents concurrently.
Named agents each carry their own instructions, memory, tools, MCP servers, and model settings, and can be addressed with an @mention. Agents can run on a cron schedule, react to file system changes, or run periodic heartbeat checklists. An opt-in episodic memory lets an agent recall facts from earlier sessions, from bundles pulled from Kocoro Cloud or built locally.
Tool calls pass through a permission engine that hard-blocks destructive commands, splits compound shell commands and checks each part, always asks before high-risk commands, and applies allowlists for commands, directories, and network egress. Every call is written to an append-only audit log with secrets redacted, and lifecycle hooks can deny a tool call before it runs. A realtime voice interface, Koe, handles computer tasks during a spoken conversation, using OpenAI or Qwen realtime models.
Features
- Local computer access: file operations, archives, document text extraction, shell, AppleScript, and native GUI control of macOS apps
- Browser automation: Playwright MCP when configured, with fallbacks that drive the user's real browser or an isolated profile
- Chat channels: Slack, LINE, Feishu, Telegram, and webhook messages routed through Shannon Cloud, with interactive tool approval
- Named agents: per-agent instructions, memory, tools, MCP servers, slash commands, and model overrides
- Automation triggers: cron schedules that persist across reboots, file system watchers, and heartbeat checklists
- Permission engine: hard blocks, denied and allowed command lists, an always-ask gate for high-risk commands, and directory and egress allowlists
- Audit log and hooks: append-only JSON audit log with secret redaction, plus pre- and post-tool hooks that can deny calls
- MCP server and client: exposes local tools to MCP clients over stdio and connects to external MCP servers
- Episodic memory: opt-in recall of facts from earlier sessions, from cloud or locally built memory bundles
- Voice interface: realtime spoken interaction that dispatches computer tasks and stays interruptible while speaking
- Skill marketplace: installs skills from ClawHub, the Kocoro skill marketplace
- Claude Code import: Kocoro Desktop can import existing agents, skills, and instructions from Claude Code
