Pinecone is a managed vector database used as the retrieval layer for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, and agent memory. One index supports search, upsert, and reranking, with dense vectors alongside native full-text search for exact matching.
Its product line has three parts: the Database, Nexus, and a Marketplace of deployable assistant templates. Nexus is a knowledge engine for agents that compiles an organization's data into governed knowledge once and then answers through a single declarative query in the KnowQL language, in place of a multi-hop agentic retrieval loop.
| Nexus vs agentic RAG (vendor benchmarks) | Result |
|---|---|
| Tokens per query | 85–97% fewer |
| Time to completion | 30x faster |
| Accuracy (LLM judge vs human-labeled answers) | 14–94% higher |
Builders reach Pinecone through its API or through plugins for coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Codex, and Gemini CLI, plus an MCP server. Indexes are managed from a web console or the terminal. Hosting runs in cloud regions that recently added Frankfurt and Singapore, and a Bring Your Own Cloud option is generally available. Pricing includes a flat entry tier.
