Roo Code was a VS Code extension that put a team of AI coding agents inside the editor. It generated code from natural-language descriptions and specs, refactored and debugged existing code, wrote and updated documentation, answered questions about a codebase, automated repetitive tasks, and connected to MCP servers.
Work was organized around modes that change how the agent behaves: Code mode for everyday edits and file operations, Architect mode for planning systems, specs, and migrations, Ask mode for explanations and documentation, Debug mode for tracing issues and isolating root causes, and Custom modes for team-specific workflows.
The Roo Code extension was shut down on May 15. The project points to ZooCode, a fork started by the Roo Code community, and to Cline, from which Roo Code originated, as alternatives.
