Test Gru is a GitHub app that writes unit tests for code changes. Installed on a repository, it identifies files that need unit tests, adds tests for them, and runs those tests to check the code behaves as described.
It works inside the existing pull request flow. A pull request triggers a run, or you can start one by hand from the Gru.ai console, and once the written tests pass the agent submits them for review. Projects using Vitest, Jest, or JUnit work with the default configuration, and other setups are covered by a configuration file.
The app is in beta. It covers TypeScript, Java, Go, and Python, with further languages being added.
Features
- Change detection: identifies the files in a pull request that need unit tests, for existing code as well as new code
- Write and run: the agent writes the tests and runs them before submitting anything for review
- Pull request trigger: runs automatically on a pull request, or on demand from the Gru.ai console, without replacing the existing workflow
- Coverage: targets unit test coverage as a way to raise confidence in a change
- Language coverage: TypeScript, Java, Go, and Python during the beta
- Repository permissions: read access to issues and metadata, and read and write access to code, pull requests, and repository hooks
- Usage limits: 5 assignments per month on the free tier and 100 per month on the paid monthly tier
