01 / About

What Kilo Code is.

Kilo Code is an open-source coding agent that runs in the same places you already work: a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, a command-line tool, and a hosted cloud agent. You pick from more than 500 models, switch between them mid-task, and pay the model provider's own rate, with no API key needed to start.

The agent ships with specialised modes you switch between: Code implements and edits code from natural language, Plan designs architecture and writes an implementation plan first, Ask answers questions without touching files, Debug traces issues, and Review surfaces problems across performance, security, style, and test coverage. Custom agents can be defined alongside them.

Beyond code generation across multiple files, it does inline autocomplete with ghost-text suggestions, reviews and corrects its own work, controls the terminal and a browser, and wires up MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers through a marketplace. kilo run --auto runs with all permission prompts disabled for CI/CD pipelines, which the project notes is only for trusted environments. Alongside the local agent, the platform offers cloud agents, automated code review on pull requests, and an always-on agent.

The CLI is a fork of OpenCode adapted to the Kilo platform, and installs through npm, pnpm, bun, Homebrew, the AUR, a shell installer, or prebuilt binaries for Windows, macOS, and Linux, including baseline builds for CPUs without AVX and musl builds for Alpine or minimal container images.

Features

  • One agent across surfaces: VS Code, JetBrains, the CLI, and cloud agents share the same open-source agent
  • Model choice: more than 500 models with mid-task switching, billed at the provider's rate
  • Specialised modes: Code, Plan, Ask, Debug, and Review, plus custom agents you define
  • Multi-file code generation: implements and edits code across files from a natural-language description
  • Inline autocomplete: ghost-text suggestions accepted with tab
  • Self-checking: the agent reviews and corrects its own output
  • Terminal and browser control: runs commands and automates the web as part of a task
  • MCP marketplace: find and connect MCP servers that extend what the agent can do
  • Autonomous mode: kilo run --auto skips permission prompts for CI/CD use
  • Cloud and review: hosted agents, automated pull-request code review, and an always-on agent
