OpenHands

OpenHands, formerly OpenDevin, is a platform for software-development agents. Its main front end, Agent Canvas, is a self-hosted control center where you start conversations with coding agents and set up automations, such as reports that publish to Slack or GitHub issues decomposed into tasks. It runs the open-source OpenHands agent out of the box and can also run third-party agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Pi, and OpenCode, or any agent that speaks the Agent Client Protocol (ACP).

Agent Canvas connects to one or more agent backends and switches between them from the same interface. A backend can run on your laptop, a dedicated machine such as a Mac Mini, a cloud VM, company infrastructure, or OpenHands Cloud and Enterprise. Agents can run directly on the host, in a single Docker sandbox, or in a separate Docker container per conversation for running several agents concurrently. A shared server can handle team work such as code review and dependency updates while personal agents run locally.

Each backend is an OpenHands Agent Server, a REST API for running multiple agents on one host, implemented by the OpenHands Python SDK and consumed through a TypeScript client. It is often paired with an Automation Server that runs agents on a schedule or in response to webhook events. Automations integrate with Slack, GitHub, Linear, Jira, Notion, and Datadog, with templates for triaging issues, reviewing pull requests, fixing CI failures, remediating security findings, and drafting incident retrospectives. Models are configurable per profile, and any LLM can be used.
