OpenHands (Agent Canvas) is a self-hosted control center for running coding agents and automations. It provides an interface for starting agent conversations and automating routine engineering tasks — generating reports that publish to Slack, decomposing GitHub issues into tasks, and similar workflows that can run on a schedule or in response to webhook events.
It runs locally by default but connects to multiple 'agent backends' — agents in Docker containers, on VMs, or within company infrastructure — and lets you switch between local, remote, and cloud backends from one frontend. It runs the open-source OpenHands agent out of the box but can drive any agent that speaks the Agent-Client Protocol (ACP), including Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini, with any LLM.
Architecturally it is powered by the OpenHands Agent Server, a REST API for running multiple agents on a single host, often paired with an Automation Server for scheduled and event-triggered runs. Formerly named OpenDevin. Note that agents run with access to the host filesystem unless sandboxed in Docker.
